The Matchmaker

It had all been arranged quite nicely, hadn’t it? If they made it to the end of seven days without killing each other. I hoped they did because ever since Belle had laid eyes on Cole, it had been nothing but love. And I was pretty much the one responsible for coming between them.

I had been a kid at the time, and a stupid one at that. How would I know that their love was the soul type of love that would out last time, space and bona fide hatred? Well, it wasn’t really hate. It was resentment and anger at being kept apart from your soulmate. I understood. I felt it myself. Every single day.

I said a little prayer for the hopefully happy couple. I had to make things right for them. They’d waited long enough, spent far too much time without each other. The day of reckoning had finally come. I had to do penance for what I’d done. I had to make things right. Only then would I have maybe a tiny chance of happiness, too. If I hadn’t blown it already. It had been years since that kiss. Who knew what memories people kept? Or shut down.

But this time, this moment was for Belle and Cole. They had to make it. For all our sakes. Because I had to make amends for many others. There was much more work to do. So, I raised a toast to Belle and Cole, alone in my dark kitchen. They’d hate me if they knew what I’d done. But I prayed for a happy union. We were all depending on them.
